Disinfection mechanism
Disinfection means purifying a medium up to the extend that it can no longer
cause infective disease with humans, animals and plants that come in contact
with the medium (mainly water).
Because of its high oxidation potential, O3 oxidizes cell components of the bacterial cell
wall. This is a consequence of cell wall penetration. Once O3 has entered the cell, it oxidizes all
essential components (enzymes, proteins, DNA, RNA). When the cellular membrane
is damaged during this process, the cell will fall apart.
The benefit of O3 is that it influences pH and temperature minimally on a broad spectrum. Although O3 solubility decreases when temperatures rise, disinfection rates increase per 10°C (factor 2 or 3). Within the range of 0 – 30°C, these two factors diminish one another . The disinfection rate of O3 hardly changes in a pH range of 6 – 8,5 . For certain resistant microorganisms (such as Giardia Muris), the disinfection rate increases at higher pH values . For other species of microorganisms, this is the other way around.
In addition to the strong oxidizing power of O3, properties of O3 also helps to be an ideal aerial disinfectant. In contrast to UV radiation and HEPA filter, O3 is a gas that could penetrate to every corners of the room, thus it could disinfect the entire room effectively. As O3 is unstable, it is readily converted back to oxygen, leaving no harmful residual ozone after disinfection.
Air Disinfection
Microorganisms cause issues in various places, in a clinical setting bacteria can cause dangerous outbreaks. O3 can be used as a chemical disinfectant to kill bacteria and viruses with low O3 concentrations. The contact time is altered depending on the desired deactivation grade. No chemical residue remains after treatment as O3 naturally decomposes to oxygen. In terms of usage, distribution as a gas enables O3 to reach hard to sanitize surfaces, reaching spots difficult to wipe. Studies has shown that low O3 concentrations are capable of deactivating bacteria and enveloped viruses by reacting with unsaturated fatty acids in the plasma membrane, certain surface proteins and DNA.
In a clinical setting Nano life O3 generators can reduce the risk of pathogens spreading when new patients enters previously occupied rooms, it can also be used after traditional cleaning to reduce the risk of disease spreading from infectious body fluid left by the previous patient.
For clinics that are closed during the night, Nanolife O3 treatment can be scheduled in waiting rooms, corridors and bathrooms giving plenty of time for treatment and O3 destruction before the first employee enters.
For surgery rooms or other areas that need a 6 log scale deactivation of bacteria, viruses and even spores, specialized solutions using high concentrations of O3 in a sealed room over specific period is necessary. The sanitation process can be started from a panel outside the room, and information regarding remaining time is displayed.
